Summary

This exploratory study focused on addressing which strategies and instruments do national and supra national governments use in facilitating sustainable production and consumption in global supply chains as well as put together the knowledge on effectiveness of these strategies and instruments. It focussed on two supply chains, mainly timber and coffee, which is compared with cocoa and tea. For timber, FSC and PEFC are compared. For cocoa, coffee and tea the certification schemes looked at are Organic, Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, GlobalGAP and UTZ.
