Summary

This study looks into the relative performance of two Fairtrade-certified sugarcane cooperatives in Paraguay and explores the politico-economic reasons underlying teir success and failure. It situates the cooperative in the context of the value chain and how the relationships between various actors in the value chain and the extent and nature of 'clientilism' prevelant determines success.
