Summary
This report evaluates Bonsucro’s 2023–2024 outcomes, focusing on membership growth, certification expansion, environmental performance, human rights protection, and updates to sustainability standards. The analysis uses quantitative data from certified mills, smallholder farmers, and supply chain actors, including land area, sugar and ethanol production volumes, greenhouse gas emissions, and water use, complemented by qualitative insights from audit reports, member submissions, case studies, and Continuous Improvement surveys. Research design involved longitudinal monitoring of certified operators’ environmental and social indicators, tracking adoption of Production Standard Version 5.2 and EU-RED Standard V2.1, and assessing the impact of Bonsucro-led projects supporting members at various stages of their sustainability journey. Results show 43 new members from 21 countries, growth of certified smallholders to over 14,000, 26% expansion of certified land, 11.2 million tonnes of sugar and a 27% increase in ethanol production under Bonsucro standards, reductions of 42% in water consumption and 14% in GHG emissions over five years, and human rights coverage for 180,900 workers, among others.
