Summary
This report evaluates Bonsucro’s 2022 outcomes, focusing on membership expansion, certification adoption, environmental performance, human rights protection, and the implementation of updated sustainability standards. The analysis uses quantitative data from certified mills, smallholder farmers, and supply chain actors, including land area, sugar, molasses, and ethanol production volumes, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, and fertiliser application, alongside qualitative insights from case studies, member reports, and stakeholder consultations. Research design involved longitudinal tracking of certified operators’ environmental and social indicators, monitoring adoption of Production and Chain of Custody Standards, and assessing the impact of Bonsucro-led projects and the rollout of version 5.1 of the Production Standard. Results show growth of 32 new members, nearly 2,000 new smallholder farmers certified, 1.9 million hectares under certification, reductions of 17% in GHG emissions, 41% in water consumption, and 11% in fertiliser use, as well as human rights coverage for 196,200 workers.
