Summary
This report examines Bonsucro’s 2021 outcomes, focusing on membership growth, certification expansion, environmental performance, human rights protection, and the implementation of its new strategic plan. The study draws on quantitative data from certified mills and smallholder farmers, including land area, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, chemical application, and worker statistics, as well as qualitative data from public consultations, case studies, and stakeholder engagement. Research design involved longitudinal monitoring of environmental and social indicators, tracking certification uptake, and evaluating the impact of Bonsucro-led projects and partnerships. Results indicate an increase in certified mills from 128 to 145, the first certifications in Barbados, Pakistan, and among smallholders in Brazil, sustained reductions in environmental impacts, and improved labour conditions for over 180,000 workers.
