This paper explores the concept and history of 'Free, Prior and Informed Consent' (FPIC). It also review the efforts that companies and development agencies have put in place to integrate the concept and address the issues surrunding human rights, indigenous peoples and their relationship with the extractive industry. The article pays special attention to the Brazilian context.
