Summary
The article proposes a new framework for seaweed producing countries to mitigate biosecurity threats. The authors argue that international mechanisms aimed at controlling aquatic diseases do not currently cover threats to seaweed. They highlight the importance of the growing global seaweed industry and cite increasing threats, in the form of rising sea temperatures and eutrophication, which have led to more prevalent disease and pest outbreaks. Whilst the UN FAO and partners have recently developed a Progressive Management Pathway for improving aquaculture biosecurity – authors argue that this should be adapted specifically for seaweed, They propose a four stage plan.
