Summary

This article analyses Fairtrade Gold in Tanzania, arguing that largely informal local markets and a general mistrust of development interventions compromise the promise of improving prices for Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) operators. Despite this, the author recognises the scheme's value in increasing recognition for ASM operators in the global south.
