Summary

The report takes a special approach to the principle of free prior and informed consent (FPIC), focussing on the the principle's substance that they name 'the spirit of FPIC': respect of individual and collective rights and the chance to take part in a deliberative decision-making process of one's own development. The authors present a three-point framework aiming at going beyond merely legal requirements step by step, and encourage companies to implement the "spirit of FPIC" throughout the project life-cycle. Finally, they recommend to enlarge the spirit of FPIC's scope to all affected local communities.
