  • Date: 4 December 2024
  • Time: 14:00 - 15:30 GMT

Learning Event summary

Ecosystem restoration is essential to reversing the degradation of natural landscapes, which affects up to 40% of the world’s land and poses risks to biodiversity, communities, and economic resilience. As restoration efforts aim to meet ambitious global targets, there is a growing need to mobilise private capital to help plug the estimated $300 billion annual financing gap and scale up successful models. This event, held in partnership with the UNDP Food And Agricultural Commodity Systems, will explore innovative financing strategies for ecosystem restoration, highlighting the importance of mobilising private investment to tackle the urgent challenges of environmental degradation.

The discussion will address key barriers to attracting private capital, explore innovative financing mechanisms, and examine successful case studies. By bringing together insights from funding entities, NGOs, project beneficiaries, and researchers, the event aims to enhance understanding and practical skills in ecosystem restoration financing while fostering open dialogue among stakeholders to share knowledge and good practices.

Key questions:

  • What are the main barriers to private investment in ecosystem restoration, and how can they be addressed?
  • What innovative financing mechanisms can be utilised to enhance private investment in ecosystem restoration?
  • What successful case studies demonstrate the integration of innovative financing in ecosystem restoration?
  • What do the outcomes from COP 16 mean for securing private finance?
