This report looked at 19 schemes, which were created to improve social, environmental and economic issues in the mining sector. This report was conducted in order to come out with a comprehensive overview and make suggestions for harmonization. The report researched the 19 schemes according to their coverage, management approach and practices and the issues represented and addressed in the schemes. The report finds that for example that environmental issues like energy, water and material use are not addressed in most of the schemes. The report suggests to work towards harmonization of the standards used by the schemes, also to improve incentive and assurance mechanisms and being more consistent when it comes to outcomes and impacts. A harmonization would enhance understanding, improve credibility and the uptake of standards.
