This article explores price premiums received by fishermen in the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified Swedish Eastern Baltic cod fishery over 2011-2012. The researchers use a panel data methodology to estimate the price premium from their dataset of landing tickets and log books. The results confim the presence of a price premium in the retail market, however do not show this premium reflected at the fish production level. The researchers identify a number of potential explanations for this, namely the structure of the Swedish food processing and retail industries, the presence of imported fish products in the retail market, and whether processor practices mean that not all MSC-certified fish actually bears the MSC logo at retail.
